Since leaving college I have worked for a local company gaining experience of pat testing a wide range of appliances within offices, factories, shops, public houses and clubs testing a wide range of appliances. I then set up Sunderland Pat Testing.
What is Pat Testing
It is a method where portable appliances are given a formal visual inspection. Cables are checked to make sure there is no cuts or abrasions that allow the wires to be seen or touched, plugs are taken apart to check that the correct fuse has been installed and to make sure that the wires are secured properly. After these have been checked it is then attached to a pat testing machine, this checks that the Earth continuity, Insulation resistance and Polarity are all within the tolerances laid down in the IEE (Institute of electrical engineers). Code of practice. If the appliances do not fall within the tolerances laid down then they are recorded as a fail & taken out of use immediately.
The Law

The code of practice which we use as a guide has been prepared by the IEE.

tests are carried out to ensure that the electrical equipment is maintained
